About the Design
Imbolc is a Pagan Celebration and Gaelic seasonal festival around 1-2 January, the mid point between the Winter solstice and the Spring equinox. It centers around the Goddess Brigid and traditionally people would make Brigid crosses or dolls that would be paraded from dwelling to dwelling. St Brigid is now an important Saint in Ireland and Imbolc is also known as Candlemas, a time when the first shoots of Spring begin to appear as light levels grow. This painting is a celebration of the Goddess Brigid. The white swan is her animal Totem, The candle brings in the light and she is associated with the sun and the colours red, orange and white. Snowdrops and Crocus are traditionally the first flowers of Spring in the British Isles and her cross can be seen in the sky.
