From the old rhyme 'One for sorrow'. Historically, we have have a love/hate relationship with Magpies, especially since the onset of Christianity where Magpies were considered omens of misfortune. However, in earlier times Magpies were considered symbols of Good Fortune as they are in other cultures, including many Asian cultures. In Norse traditions, Magpies were associated with the Winter Goddess Skadi and Hel, the daughter of logi who was said to have both blue and natural (White) skin. This piece celebrates the intelligence and beauty of Magpies, which are a common site throughout most of rural Britain.
